Fort Sherman, San Lorenzo, and Panama Canal Historical Tour
Long before the building of the Panama Canal, the Caribbean side of the Panama Canal was once the epicenter of the trade routes between the Americas and Europe.
The Spanish built Fort San Lorenzo & Fort Sherman to protect their stolen treasures brought up the coast from Peru before getting shipped back to Spain. Pirates attacked and destroyed these forts to plunder the treasure, the Spanish rebuilt them again and the trend continued throughout the region until the trade routes finally changed and left the remains of these 2 UNESCO World Heritage sites we can see today.
Fort Sherman, San Lorenzo, and Panama Canal Historical Tour Highlights:
- Chagres National Park: This important watershed has been protected since 1985. The rivers that flow here are the most important for maintaining the water levels for the operation of the Panama Canal. An abundance of wildlife can be found here and Fort San Lorenzo is actually located at the edge of the park.
- Fort San Lorenzo: Looted and destroyed by Pirates of the Caribbean, the remains of this UNESCO World Heritage Site are spectacular and make for great photo ops. The same area also housed the US at Ft. Sherman during their occupation of the Canal Zone. The protected jungle of the surrounding Chagres was used for training long after the rest of the fort was obsolete.
- Fort Sherman: This former US Military Base was originally built to protect the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal. In more recent years, Fort Sherman was used as the Jungle Warfare Training base for Navy Seals.
- Agua Claras Locks: Just opened in June of 2016, these are the newest and largest of all the locks systems along the Panama Canal. A truly impressive engineering feat! At the Agua Clara Visitors Center you can enjoy a short film on the history and construction of the Panama Canal in the mini theater, buy souvenirs from the gift shop and enjoy the 360° views of ships passing through the Panama Canal and Lake Gatun. The new visitor’s center at Agua Clara is sure to be a highlight of your Panama Vacation!

Bonus!!: Rather than drive across the continent, take a ride on a piece of history along the Panama Canal Railway. This unique train ride takes you along the east bank of the Canal. Add the train ride from Panama City to Colon for an additional $25 on the day of your trip. We will pick you up at your hotel and take you to the train station in the morning, and meet you on the other side of the continent!
Insider Tips: Take the Train!!! This little piece of recently restored history really is a ‘must do’ activity while visiting Panama City. Many people take the train in the morning and wait all day in Colon for the afternoon train ride back with nothing to do there. By doing the train and the historical forts together, you are getting the most out of your transcontinental experience.
IMPORTANT NOTICE!!! If you are not a Panamanian citizen, you MUST have your passport on you at all times in Panama.
