The original site founded in 1519 by Pedro Arias de Davila was the first city to be established on the Pacific coast by European settlers. The original settlement is located a few miles outside the city's current location.
The ruin site is very extensive, however you really have to use your imagination to believe that this once Peruvian gold rich city housed over 10,000 inhabitants. Sir Henry Morgan's invasion in 1671 of this once booming port left this city burnt to the ground and never to be rebuilt in the same location again. Insider Tip: It is actually quite sad that the government took until just recently to finally recognize the importance of this site so it was not as well preserved as most important sites. The recent upgrades and restoration makes it all worthwhile and having a guide bring it all to life for you is absolutely essential… especially if you cannot read Spanish. There is little literature and signage on the site, and what is available is primarily only in Spanish.
