Indian Village Tour
Unlike most countries that have very little remaining of their indigenous heritage after the Spanish Conquest, the indigenous tribes of this region took refuge in the impenetrable Darien and have kept their language and their culture nearly completely intact.
Fast forward a few hundred years, some of the Embera and Wounaan tribes have migrated back within reach of the city. A short scenic drive out of the city will bring us to the Gamboa public dock. From here we will embark on a small boat on Gatun Lake that will take us to to meet these amazing survivors
Our guide has many years working with this particular group of Wounaan families who have welcomed us to come and get a glimpse of how they live, and share in their unique culture. This is truly an authentic group of indigenous people living and working to maintain their heritage.
Upon arrival, your guide will translate while the leaders of this tribe explain more about their history, learn more about how they live, and why they migrated out of the Darien to this region. They will also guide us through a short walk through nature as the Wounaan point out the medicinal values of each important flora we encounter.
Back at the village, we will be treated to a traditional dance performance passed down through generations. Before we depart, you will have the chance to spend a little free time examining the handicraft skills of basket making and wood and Tagua nut carvings the Wounaan are famous for. You can even purchase a souvenir or two to take with you at half the price you will find in the markets in town.
